Telangana Allows Shops to Operate 24/7 During Ramzan: A Welcome Move for Devotees

In a significant move to support the Muslim community during Ramzan, the Telangana government has granted permission for all shops and establishments in the state to operate 24/7 from March 2 to March 31, 2025. This decision aims to provide greater convenience for people observing the holy month, allowing them to shop and access essential services at any time.

Guidelines for Round-the-Clock Operations

The Labour Department of Telangana has issued specific directives to ensure that businesses function smoothly while adhering to labor laws. Some key conditions include:

1. Overtime Wages for Employees

Workers putting in extra hours during this period must receive overtime wages, calculated at twice their regular pay, as per the Telangana Shops and Establishment Act, 1988.

2. Compensatory Leave for Staff

Employees working on designated holidays will be entitled to compensatory leave, ensuring that their rights and well-being are protected.

3. Work Hour Limitations

To prevent excessive working hours, the government has set a limit of 13 hours per day, including Sundays, for all employees.

4. Safety Measures for Women Employees

Businesses employing women in night shifts must implement proper security arrangements and provide transportation facilities for their safety.

Government Initiatives for a Smooth Ramzan

Alongside the 24/7 shop operations, the Telangana government has directed local authorities to improve infrastructure and essential services in key areas:

  • Upgrades at Major Mosques: Renovation and security enhancements at Macca Masjid and Royal Mosque in Hyderabad.
  • Sanitation and Public Facilities: Ensuring clean surroundings, uninterrupted water and electricity supply, and maintaining law and order throughout the state.

Public Response and Community Appreciation

The decision has been met with widespread approval, with community leaders expressing gratitude to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for his proactive approach. The advance notice has also allowed businesses and authorities to prepare adequately for the extended operational hours.

Conclusion

By allowing shops to remain open round-the-clock, the Telangana government has taken a progressive step to accommodate the needs of the Muslim community during Ramzan. This initiative ensures greater flexibility for residents, making it easier for them to shop, dine, and carry out their religious observances without time constraints. At the same time, the government’s focus on employee welfare and public infrastructure reflects a balanced approach that benefits both businesses and citizens alike.
